MAJOR ADVANCES TO BE ANNOUNCED AT PP XX

Major technical and business advances will be announced at the International Plastic Pipes XX Conference and Exhibition. These developments are previewed by the provisional program of papers for the conference that will be held September 6 – 8, 2021 at the Okura Hotel in Amsterdam.

Zoran Davidovski (PPXX Chairman) comments: “Ever since our first event in Southampton (UK) in 1972, our conferences have become a platform for news and reviews about innovation within the plastic pipe industry. Such innovation has not been stifled over the last eighteen months – good ideas in our industry have always found their way to fruition.

”“USA and the EU countries are now safe countries from which to travel to The Netherlands. Very soon, over 400 business and technology delegates from around the world will meet in Amsterdam to share insights into the fascinating world of plastic pipe systems. The entire industrial supply chain will be represented and like our plastic pipes, these networking connections will be long lasting.

Hydrogen: lightweight pipes for lightweight gas

Plastic pipelines that deliver hydrogen also come with the promise of long life. Conference will review UK results from testing polyethylene pipes for use in gas distribution systems. Given that hydrogen is easily produced from renewable sources, its potential for such an appplication is gathering interest elsewhere in Northern Europe.

For example, the Danish Gas Technology Centre will report with raw material supplier Borealis on ten years of testing experience in a small-scale pilot grid. From the Netherlands, where hydrogen is already a key component in the current energy transition, Kiwa Technology will announce their test results on a Reinforced Thermoplastic Pipe (RTP) system with an HDPE liner for hydrogen gas distribution.

Morocco - no more walking for water in rural community

PPXX will feature numerous project case studies that illustrate the many benefits of flexible plastic pipe systems over those of more rigid pipe materials. One interesting study will be presented by the Columbian University Chapter of Engineers Without Borders. This student engineering project was undertaken in the rural community of Ait Bayoud, Morocco, where two of the most remote villages endured water scarcity.

A previously installed leaking iron pipe was beyond repair and to meet their water needs, women and children were compelled to walk several kilometers to the nearest spring each day.

Over the course of six weeks, engineering students from the Chapter implemented a fully functional four-kilometer HDPE pipeline complete with a 38,000 liter tank, 5.4 kW solar pumping system, and four tapstands. This system currently distributes clean water to 370 people.

PVC Pipes - more sustainable white pigment

For more than 100 years, Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) has been used as a white pigment to make paint, sausages, toothpaste and inks. Now Andrew White from FP Pigments Oy in the UK will announce to conference that a new generation of TiO2 has a significantly lower carbon footprint than conventional TiO2 in PVC pipe formulation.

“When replacing 10 – 35 wt% of the TiO2 in a PVC pipe formulation,” explains White, “the unique particle morphology and functionality enables the manufacturer to better optimise their formulations and to positively enhance the overall performance of PVC Pipe systems.”

PVC pipe systems were first commercially introduced in 1936. Since then, long life and recycling have emphasized their environmental credentials. “This paper will review the technology, present a reduced carbon footprint as well as the most recent laboratory results in developing an improved sustainable PVC compound using smart titanium dioxide,” says White.

The preliminary PPXX technical program is posted on:

PPXX CONFERENCE MOVES FORWARD – TECHNICAL PROGRAM NOW ONLINE

Many advances in the field of plastic pipe technology have been announced by organizers of the Plastic Pipes XX Conference with the online publication of their technical program. The PPCA board and operating committee are continuously reviewing COVID 19 developments and plan to move forward with their conference and exhibition to be held September 21 – 23, 2020 at the Okura Hotel in Amsterdam.

Over 400 delegates are scheduled to attend the biannual conference and review a total of 116 papers for delivery in two parallel sessions. Sessions will discuss worldwide advancements in material development, research findings, case studies, non-destructive testing methods and other areas concerning plastic pipe technology and the industry that promotes it.

In addition to presentations and a sizeable exhibition facility, this year's conference will include a scheduled Poster Gallery Walk for the first time. Sarah Patterson, Organizing Committee Co-chair and Technical Program Manager of PPXX comments: “Our conference is a truly global event that typically encourages human and plastic pipeline connections. This new format will enhance the communication process. Poster authors will be available at various times to discuss their work and provide an additional opportunity for attendees to exchange knowledge and network during the conference. Delegates are still able to visit and browse the Gallery posters any time of day.”

The preliminary technical program has posted to the PPXX web page: https://ppxx.eu/en/technical-program/preliminary-abstract-book-and-program.

This technical program comprises more than 100 papers. Abstract highlights include fundamental research into the recycling possibilities of PEX pipes, increased benefits from the use of nano-additives for making PVC pipe systems and an investigation into the quality characteristics of polyamide pipe welds.

Recycling new pipes from old
For over 35 years, closed-loop collection and recycling schemes for in-service PE and PVC pipe systems have proved successful. Now Basell Polyolefine GmbH (Germany) has achieved a way to recycle end of service life crosslinked PE-X and multilayer pipes. Their conference presentation will explain how they have developed a pyrolysis system in line with the requirements of the petrochemical process.
A catalyst system is now under development to depolymerize plastic waste to make new PE-X and multilayer pipes. Such a prospect would convey significant advantages for plastics in general and for the plastic pipe industry in particular.

Breakthrough from nano-additives in PVC pipes
A breakthrough will be announced to conference in the development of special nano-structured materials for use as additives in the manufacture of rigid PVC sewer and water pipe systems. Resulting benefits in mechanical performances from such pipes comprise enhanced rigidity and a simultaneous increase in tensile strength and elongation. Dr. Enrico Boccaleri, a researcher from the Italian University of Piemonte Orientale (UPO) will share the results of this three year development program undertaken in collaboration with seven principal PVC pipe producers in Italy.

Raising quality standards for polyamide gas pipes
Polyamide 12 is a high-performance thermoplastic material used in the manufacture of high pressure gas pipe systems. Two research institutes, the German Plastics Center (SKZ) and The Welding Institute (TWI), in cooperation with Evonik and Westnetz, have examined the established quality tests for pipe welds on PA 12 pipes. Their results are expected to be used for training of personnel as well as for the extension of international technical standards.

The international Pipes Conference has posted an online database publishing all papers delivered since their first convention in 1970 in Southampton (UK). Included within this archive are the papers delivered by their most recent event in Las Vegas in 2018.

Organized by the Plastic Pipe Conference Association (PPCA) and held every two years, the Conference and Exhibition are hosted by PPCA members: PE 100+ Association, the Plastics Pipe Institute, Inc. “The world of plastic pipe technology is home to a booming market for ideas, innovation and development. Presentations were of high quality and the forum provided a genuine technical transfer of knowledge and experience from the entire global manufacturing industry.”

Approximately 210 companies attended PPXIX representing many countries. Given that this year's conference was hosted in the USA, a breakdown analysis of attendees pinpoints North America (54 percent) as the major origin of delegates. Nevertheless, Europe occupied second league position with 23 percent of conference participants, followed by Asia (predominantly China) at 15 percent. Countries new to the PPCA conference included Romania, Botswana, Columbia, Peru and others.
